Sangre Yanga was an endurance performance by Carlos Martiel that delved into the history of slavery and colonialism in Mexico.
In Mexico, the struggles of the Afro- descendant population have been ignored and erased from official history. This work refers to the lack of recognition as a minority by the government that suffers the black population in Mexico — the majority of whom have lived isolated in the Pacific coast region of Oaxaca since their ancestors were brought as slaves from Africa in the sixteenth century.
For the performance, six Mexicans of different generations took turns to hold a sculpture made with steel safety spikes, inside which Martiel stood outdoors without being able to move.
